The scenery from the Sault to Thunder Bay is breathtaking, and lake Superior, as beautiful as she is, can be ferocious. As large as many seas this fresh water treasure is truly a site to visit, with her clear waters and rugged shoreline she is a marvel. On a calm day she can entice you into her freezing cold waters for a refreshing dip, but she must be respected, for when she angers her swells will claim lives and ships alike. In between her harsh sheer cliffs lake Superior offers beaches and bays of rounded stones. The stones of granite and hard minerals are sculpted by her relentless caresses. Rounding their edges and polishing them into gems that twinkle in the shallows. This painting inspired by the Group of Seven and their use of colour in their own paintings of Algoma is intended to capture the jewel like nature of these gems that Superior offers.
